Obituary for C. Gene Cayten, MD

C. Gene Cayten, M.D. died on June 23, 2022 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, NY. He was 81 years old and a longtime resident of Chappaqua, NY. Gene graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ. After graduation from both Cornell University and New York Medical College, Dr. Cayten earned a master’s degree in public health from Yale University. He did his surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he served on the faculty for ten years and co-founded the Center for the Study of Emergency Health Services. He then took a position as chief of surgery at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in the Bronx and professor of surgery at New York Medical College where he particularly enjoyed teaching students and residents from around the world that were drawn to the school. He also made major professional contributions to the development of trauma care systems as director of a new Institute for Trauma and Emergency Care. Gene was a loving husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family boating, fishing and playing tennis at their home on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. Dr. Cayten is survived by his wife Marianna, his son Christopher, his daughter-in-law Megan, and their three children Caterina, Will and Chili. His daughter Carasandra pre-deceased him, leaving her husband John Kyles and their daughter Charlotte. The family is planning a memorial in the NY area in the fall.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 4th 2022, 2pm at St. Mary the Virgin Church, 191 Greely Ave, Chappaqua NY, 10514.
