Obituary for Howard J. Linnartz

Howard J. Linnartz of Pleasantville, NY. passed away on Tuesday, May 21st 2019.
He was 95 Years Old. Howard was born in Brooklyn, NY at thirteen years old witnessed
the Hindenburg airship explosion. He later graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School.
He then enlisted with friends from his speed skating team (Brooklyn Silver Skates) and
joined the US Army 10th Mountain Division and trained in New York & Colorado (skiing). While deployed in Europe, caught pneumonia, recuperated in London. He was reassigned to The Big Red 1 Infantry Division, as an ordinance unit and prepared vehicles in London. On D-Day he landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy (first wave). Served in Africa, Europe in Five major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. He then served for the duration of the Nuremberg trails as a security guard. Upon his return, Howard attended and graduated with an undergraduate degree from Adelphi University and advanced degree in physics from New York University. Howard’s commitment to serve led him to work in the area of national defense his entire career. First at Republic Aviation on Long Island and then at IBM in Research & Development where he had several patents as a highly-trusted engineer for over 40 years. While at IBM served at the Pentagon, NASA and other National Laboratories. He is survived by the love his life, his bride of 69 years, Joy Linnartz. They built their first house together on Long Island while both being licensed pilots who flew their light aircraft. Howard’s love of flying led him to design, build and fly radio controlled model airplanes his entire life. He is also survived by his two sons, John, Robert and his grandchildren, Michael, Olivia and Jack. A dedicated family man, who was a friend to many fellow model airplane hobbyists and neighbors since he could fix anything. He has been a long time New York Yankee fan ever since the Brooklyn Dodgers departed. The family will receive friends at the Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville on Friday, May 24th from 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm. Funeral will be on Saturday, May 25th Mass at Saint John & Saint Mary’s Catholic Upper Church 30 Poillion Drive Chappaqua, NY. Followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations to: Pleasantville Ambulance Corps.or the Pleasantville Police Department in his name would be very much appreciated
