Obituary for Joan Fischer Ferris
Joan Mary Lane, the daughter of Albert and Carmela Lane, was born on September 3, 1931 in Pleasantville NY and passed away in Tarrytown NY on February 26, 2020 in the home of Patricia and Kevin Donohue at the age of 88. She is survived by her three children: Patricia (husband Kevin Donohue), Susan, and Steve (wife Leslie), step son and daughter Gary Ferris and Lee-Ann Keene along with twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Joan grew up in Pleasantville NY with her brother Albert. During her youth she had a strong passion for swimming and spent many summers competing in events at the Pleasantville pool. On June 14, 1952, Joan married Ernest E. Fischer, a Thornwood resident and brought into this world her three children, Stephen, Susan and Patricia from 1955 through 1959. In December 1955 as a young adult Joan joined and was very active in the Thornwood Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and held many offices including President and a member of the Board of Directors. She became a Life Member in 1975.
Joan started her working career with Chas H. Selles Inc. Engineering & Surveyors after graduating business school and later joined the Town of Mt. Pleasant in the Planning and Zoning department where she continued working for the next 25 years. As singing and performing was a passion, Joan joined “The Golden Apple Chorus” of White Plains NY and was an active member with the group for more than 40 years. Joan remarried in 1987 to Herbert Ferris and following retirement from the Town of Mount Pleasant spent a good amount of time traveling across the USA and Internationally. Gary and Lee-Ann have continued to provide support and assistance since Herbert’s death in August 25, 2011.
Visitation will be held at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home (418 Bedford Rd, Pleasantville, NY 10570) at 12:00 noon on Saturday 2/29 with a short service at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to either Rosary Hill Home, 600 Linda Ave., Hawthorne, NY 10532, or the Briarcliff SPCA, 590 N State Rd, Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510.
