Obituary for John Dante Bonanno

With great sadness we share that John D. Bonanno, of Briarcliff Manor, NY, passed away on February 1, 2022. John was a beloved nephew, brother, husband, father, Pop Pop and friend.

John was born in Sicily on August 18,1944. He immigrated to America at the age of 5 and spent a few years of his childhood in Canada, eventually moving to Astoria, Queens. He graduated from Newtown High School where he met his wife, Victoria.

John received his bachelors degree in chemistry and mathematics from New York University. He went on to earn his M.D. degree, Summa cum Laude at the University of Rome and trained in general surgery at St. Luke's Hospital and Medical Center, NY. He subsequently completed his training in Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the renowned Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, NY where he was chosen as the Chief Resident in his senior year.

John completed his training in Plastic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, NY. He was a senior plastic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital, the former Attending-in-Charge of Plastic Surgery at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. There he created a program in hand and microvascular surgery and trained young plastic surgeons, many of whom are in esteemed practice today.

He was an active member of numerous medical societies and is the former president of the Morgani Medical Society. He taught Plastic Surgery throughout his career and developed many unique solutions to plastic surgical challenges. He also performed pro-bono plastic surgery on patients in need, especially children, believing that we should strive to help each other in this complex world and to give back to society more than we take. John took great joy in helping others and truly gave a piece of himself to each and every patient.

John was a master storyteller with an endless supply of jokes. He let his sense of humor shine among the presence of his large family and friends, new and old. He loved fishing, gardening and drawing. He spent many weekends farming and enjoying nature at his home in Roscoe, NY.

While his professional accomplishments were many, John's greatest pride and joy was his family. He believed that love, family and friendships are what make life worth living.
John is survived by Victoria Bonanno, his loving wife of 53 years; his five adoring children, Matthew Bonanno, Justin Bonanno (Tara), John-Paul Bonanno (Kyle), Victoria (Bonanno) Hollick (Zachary), Alexandra (Bonanno) Aizer (Adam); his beloved grandchildren, Samantha, John, Luke, Olivia, Juliet, Ryan, Andrew, Emma and Sophia; his aunt, Rosalia DiFranco; his brother, Carmine Bonanno and niece, Emily Bonanno.
