Obituary for Leo Sietz

Leo Sietz passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, March 10, at his home in Briarcliff Manor. He was 101 years young. Leo was a gifted painter and illustrator. He enjoyed opera, classical music, literature, movies, and backgammon. He spent his summers swimming laps and socializing at the Briarcliff pool with his friends and family. Leo had been a tech enthusiast for decades. He was an early adopter of VCRs, DVD players, camcorders, the iMac, iPod, iPad, and iPhone. He owned dozens of cameras throughout his life and loved taking pictures and video of his family. Even at the age of 101, he was an avid user of his Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch. PhotoShop allowed him to combine his passions for art and technology. Leo will be remembered for his easy-going demeanor and quick wit. He was never angry and never raised his voice. He dispensed jokes with ease and kept his family and friends always laughing. Leo was born to Russian immigrants on June 23, 1920 in New York City, where he later met and married his beloved Lee. Lee and Leo had a fairytale romance until her death in 2009. During their 66-year marriage, they traveled to Israel, Scotland, and their favorite destination – Atlantic City. Leo made a living as an optician, and served his country as a surgical technician during World War II. He is survived by his daughter Sheri and son-in-law Irwin; his granddaughters Natalie, Melissa, Audra, and Amanda; their spouses Peter, Michael, and Catie; his great-grandchildren Sarah, Dylan, Shawn, Kayla, Joshua, Daniel, Nicholas, Brianna, Weston, Samantha, Bennett, and Cooper. He is predeceased by his wife Lee, his son Steven, his daughter-in-law Marsha, and his grandson Matthew. A graveside service will be held at Mount Eden Cemetery on Sunday, March 13, at 11am. Leo will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
