Obituary for Maria T. Engemann

Maria Theresia Engemann, “Maisie,” was born on February 4th, 1947 in New York City to Joseph and Helena Engemann. Maria is survived by her younger brother, Kurt, his wife, Anna, and their two children, Krista and Karl – a niece and a nephew who were treasures to her. Maria loved and cherished her immediate family, and she cared for them without bound.
Beginning in 1950, the Engemann family owned and operated a German delicatessen in Mount Vernon, New York. The family’s modest deli served as a staple of their Mount Vernon community, and they led the business into the mid-1960s; they operated the deli for a few years following the untimely death of the Engemann family patriarch, Joseph, in 1962.
Maria and her family were – and are still – supported by a loving extended family and network of close friends. Maria is survived by cherished first cousins, Fred Huesch (Beth), Trudy Keary (Larry), Richard Kulla (Ina), Margot Jakob (Ed), and Christel Engemann (Heinz), and by a wealth of extended family. Maria is also survived by her most dear friend, Mary Margaret “Maggie” Seta, with whom she shared a treasured friendship from childhood onward.
Maria attended Our Lady of Victory Elementary School (Mount Vernon, New York) and Academy of the Resurrection (Rye, New York) for high school. She received her Bachelor’s degree in German from Fordham University and her Master’s degree in Reading Education from the College of New Rochelle. Maria was a beloved elementary school teacher in New York and New Jersey, including at Holy Family Elementary School (New Rochelle, New York). Following her years as an enthusiastic young school teacher, Maria channeled her aptitude for writing, logic, and precision towards a four decade-long career as a para-legal professional for Ernst & Young.
A devout Catholic, Maria was effortlessly charitable. She devoted remarkable time and resources to support friends, strangers, and animals in need. As with her vibrant personality, Maria’s charity was natural and fundamental to her character.
Maria ascended to Heaven on the feast day of her father’s namesake, Saint Joseph, on March 19th, 2021.
