Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Sohigian (Kaishian)
July 1, 1932 – December 1, 2020
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Sohigian, our loving mom, grandmother, aunt and friend who was extremely special to many. She loved her family unconditionally, and was a critical part in each of our lives.
Mary was born in Syracuse, N.Y. to Onnig & Asdghik Kaishian, Armenian immigrants who taught their children the importance of hard work and family. They soon moved to Yonkers, NY where family and heritage were the mainstays. Mary graduated from Gorton High School, and worked as an executive secretary in the film and real estate industries.
She married Robert Sohigian (deceased August, 1981) in October, 1958, and they had 4 children – Paul, John, Jean & Beth Anne, all born and raised in Yonkers, N.Y.
Mary was an exceptional cook, and loved nothing more than gatherings with family & friends. “Mama” adored each of her grandchildren, all of whom have countless wonderful memories of meals, vacations and most importantly time spent together. Our family is as close knit as it is because of Mama.
Mary also loved her church, and spent countless hours giving her time to many causes at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church. She enjoyed Pilates, and working with her Gorton HS reunion committee.
Mary is survived by her children, Paul (Carrie Beth), John (Kelly), JeanMarie (Paul) & Beth Anne (Pete), and grandchildren, Bob (Emily), Melissa (Jack), Jake, Luke, Nicholas, Danielle, Zachery, Brandi & Shelby, and her brother, Matthew (Valerie), as well as many cousins, nieces & nephews and friends.
