Obituary for Monsignor Patrick J. Barry

Msgr. Patrick J. Barry died on October 17, 2021. Born to Elizabeth and Michael Barry on May 8, 1929 in the city of New York, Msgr. grew up in St Rose of Lima Parish in Washington Heights, NY, graduated as a Scholarship Student from St Ann’s Academy and Cathedral College prior to entering Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, Yonkers, NY.
He was ordained a priest on May 14, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and began his priestly duties at St John the Evangelist Parish in Mahopac, NY. From there he went to assume a teaching position at Bishop DuBois High School in NYC.
Following his time at DuBois he taught at Cardinal Hayes HS where he also served as Dean of Guidance. His next assignment led Msgr. to St. Raymond’s Parish, in the Bronx, NY.
Msgr. was then appointed to the position of Vicar for Religious for the Archdiocese of New York. A parish priest at heart, Msgr. Barry served as pastor of Church of the Visitation, in the Bronx, NY, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul in Mount Vernon and senior priest at Saints John and Mary, Chappaqua, NY.
During his retirement he resided at the Cardinal John O’Connor Home for Retired Priests in the Archdiocese of New York where he lived until his passing.
Msgr. Barry is survived by his loving sister, Geraldine Clare Barry and her husband, Daniel L. Sammartino. His devoted nephews and their wives, Kevin Douglas and Kathyann Flood, Monica Flood, and Joseph Patrick Flood and his wife, Suzanne Sims. His nephew, Keith Michael Flood (predeceased). His great nieces and nephews Meaghan Flood and her husband, Edwin Nunez, and their son Luca, Mariel and Sean Golden, Katherine, Kevin, Fiona, Elizabeth and Conor Flood, and Caryn and Myranda Sims.
The family will receive friends at the Beecher Flooks Funeral Home 418 Bedford Road in Pleasantville on Tuesday October 26th from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday October 28th at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Priest Chapel at the Cardinal John O’Connor Residence 5655 Arlington Avenue Bronx. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
