Obituary for Richard J. Cairns

Richard J. Cairns, 70, of Pleasantville, New York passed away on June 28, 2022, due to a brief battle with an aggressive form of kidney cancer. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Richard managed his illness with strength and grace, and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final days, he was surrounded by his wife and children, who he adored more than anything else in the world.

Rich was born November 24, 1951 in Queens, New York. He graduated Cum Laude from Marist College and went on to attend Pace University School of Law where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He practiced law privately for many years but later on, found his way back to his roots at the railroad and was the Deputy Director/Labor Counsel at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He was married to the love of his life, Maureen, for forty-five years. Together they had twin daughters, Amanda and Corinne.

Rich was known for his love of music. As an enthusiastic musician, in his spare time, he loved playing his guitars and piano and attending jam and listening sessions with the Manly Men of Music. He enjoyed spending time with his family, such as attending women’s Marist basketball games with his wife and daughters. He truly loved the Marist Red Foxes. Rich had a great sense of humor and never failed to make everyone laugh, including himself.

Being the only male in the household, Rich somehow always lived up to his childhood nickname, EZ-Rich. He was a kind and loving, supportive partner to his spouse Maureen, as well as an amazing and doting father to their daughters Amanda and Corinne. One of Rich’s biggest accomplishments was being a father. He was always there for them through their ups and downs and taught them to enjoy every moment life has to offer.

In addition to Maureen, Amanda, and Corinne, Rich is survived by his brother Dennis Cairns, as well as his sister Margie Cairns. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will greatly miss their Uncle Richie. He was predeceased by his parents.
