Obituary for Rita A. Rooney (Alexander)
Rita Alexander Rooney passed away peacefully at her home in Chappaqua NY on January 21, 2022. She was 90.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on December 8th, 1931. Rita and her family moved to Brooklyn NY where she and her 2 brothers, Robert and Peter were raised.
Rita, proudly graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing. She went on to graduate from Columbia University Nurse Practitioner program with a Master’s degree in Science.
Rita worked in various nursing positions including as she often said her most beloved role as Director of Student Health at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. Rita retired from this position in 2002.
She married John Rooney in 1959. They moved to Chappaqua to raised two children, Jessica Rooney and Paul Rooney.
Rita was an avid reader and life learner. Often described as a social butterfly and could make friends anywhere she went. She was a devoted parishioner of St. John and St. Mary’s of Chappaqua NY. Rita treasured her Bible study and Centering Prayer group in Armonk NY.
She was predeceased by her husband John, and brothers Robert, and Peter. She is survived by her children Jessica and Paul Rooney. She cherished her 3 grandchildren, Aleksander S. Azarov, Sonya and Sylvia Rooney.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Church of Saint John and Saint Mary (upper Church) in Chappaqua NY, on Wednesday, February 2nd at 10:30am.
Burial will follow at St. Charles Cemetery Farmingdale, NY.
