Obituary for Thomas Molnar

Thomas Molnar was born in 1934 into the tumultuous times of a pre-WWII Budapest, Hungary. His
parents, Kalman and Lenke Molnar, secured false papers for him and he survived the Holocaust hiding in
the basement of a convent. He attended the Engineering University in Budapest, but the Hungarian
Revolution interrupted his studies. In 1956, he managed to escape Communist Hungary and he moved to
London, where he completed his engineering studies with a BS from Imperial College. After earning his
MBA from the University of Chicago, Tom joined IBM and, 27 years later, retired as an executive in
international operations. A longtime lover of art and music, he volunteered as a docent at the Neuberger
Museum in Purchase, NY, for more than 16 years and, subsequently, at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich,
Connecticut, for five years. He also served on the Board of Self Help, a social services agency supporting
impoverished Holocaust survivors in the New York Metropolitan area. A man with many friends and social
engagements, first and foremost, he tirelessly devoted himself to his family. He is survived by his devoted
and much-adored wife of 41 years, Dr. Susan Harris; his daughter Julie Molnar; and four wonderful
grandchildren Sasha and Soren Shapiro, and Jaden and Jack Thomas. He was tragically predeceased by his
eldest daughter, Christine Molnar. Contributions may be made in memory of Tom Molnar to: Self Help for
the Holocaust Survivor Program or the Purchase College Conservatory of Music. To ensure your donation
