John Kelly - A Longtime Friend

John Kelly, A Longtime Friend

I awoke during the night last night to check our home weather station and saw a link by April Cordes Buchwald to John Kelly’s obituary. I was both stunned by his sudden passing and brought to the realization of life's inevitable.

John and I met in  the Hawthorne Public  School first grade (’50) and were best friends until we went to different high schools (’56). Even as kids, it was obvious that John was a formidable intellect, serious student and fun. Exploring the construction site at the bridge over the railroad, playing hockey on the tree-filled ice behind the Dutch Reformed Church, playing pitch/catch with Dave Heddermann as we honed our skills awaiting Little League  and the inevitable call to play in the major leagues.

We got together once or twice at (?) Sock Hops at Briarcliff, but it had all changed. Different circles of friends, schedules, sports. On school days, I got on a commercial bus to White Plains and John joined most of our HPS classmates going to Briarcliff. Over the years I frequently got reports from former classmates as to John’s long list of academic and professional accomplishments. Our HPS Class held a Reunion a few years ago, allowing us to «re-meet» friends from long ago. What a blessing.

To John’s family, know that John was extra special long before he grew into long pants. Carry his legacy with pride.
